Mechanism and evidence

How Does SynoCell Work? The Role of Each Ingredient

Quick answer

SynoCell works through five ingredients taken as 2 capsules a day.

Three of them, ASU, Boswellia and oral hyaluronic acid, have joint studies in people. Black pepper extract is there to help absorption.

What does SynoCell actually do in the body?

Nobody knows exactly, because the full formula has never been tested. What we can describe is how each ingredient is thought to act, based on lab work and on human trials of each one taken alone.

The bottle says the capsules support joint health and comfort, promote blood flow, support cartilage and improve mobility. Those are the seller's words. Below, each is lined up against the research.

How does the brand describe the routine?

The brand graphic boils it down to three steps: follow the label directions, rely on the product formula, and keep a daily routine. Any effect would come from steady daily use over weeks.

What the graphic leaves out is the evidence behind the formula. The rest of the page fills that gap. For the exact amounts, see the Supplement Facts panel.

The brand's three-step summary. It describes the routine; it is not evidence that the formula works.

How is ASU thought to work?

ASU is the small part of avocado and soybean oil that does not turn into soap when the oil is processed. Researchers have studied it as a possible way to ease osteoarthritis pain, and the leading product in trials was Piascledine at 300 mg a day.

What is shown in people

A Cochrane review pooled four trials with 651 people. Pain was about 8.5 points lower on a 0-100 scale than with placebo, which the authors called a small benefit of questionable clinical importance (Cameron and Chrubasik, 2014). Joint space on X-rays did not change.

What is not shown

In the 3-year ERADIAS hip trial, 399 people took ASU or placebo. Joint-space loss, pain and function ended up no different (Maheu et al., 2014 (ERADIAS)). So there is no human proof that ASU protects or restores cartilage. SynoCell lists 310 mg, close to the trial dose.

How is Boswellia thought to work?

Boswellia serrata is a tree resin, also called Indian frankincense. Its active compounds are boswellic acids, and one of them, AKBA, is the focus of most branded extracts.

In people, the best-known trial gave 75 adults with knee osteoarthritis an extract called 5-Loxin for 90 days. Pain scores dropped about 40% and 52% on the two doses, but the trial was small and linked to the maker (Sengupta et al., 2008). A meta-analysis of 7 trials with 545 patients was positive and suggests giving it at least 4 weeks (Yu et al., 2020).

Different extract, different product

SynoCell uses an extract standardized to 65% boswellic acids. The 5-Loxin trial used an extract standardized to 30% AKBA (Sengupta et al., 2008). The results may not carry over one to one. See the Boswellia profile.

What about hyaluronic acid and quercetin?

These two have the weakest joint case in the formula, for different reasons.

180 mg per serving

Hyaluronic acid

Hyaluronic acid is a sugar-like molecule found in joint fluid. When swallowed, it is digested, and how any of it might reach a joint is unclear. Small oral studies used 48-240 mg a day, often in mixtures (Oe et al., 2016). A 12-month trial at 200 mg a day, with exercise, beat placebo only in people aged 70 or younger (Tashiro et al., 2012). Swallowed HA is not a joint injection.

No human joint trials

Quercetin

Quercetin is a yellow plant pigment found in onions, apples and tea. It is sold as an antioxidant. For osteoarthritis, the only data are from animals and lab dishes (MSKCC, Quercetin). The brand store says it helps regrow strong, new bones; no human study shows that. SynoCell lists 310 mg; general supplements often go up to 1,000 mg (Andres et al., 2018).

Why is black pepper extract added?

Black pepper extract is there to help other ingredients get absorbed. Its active compound, piperine, slows some of the liver and gut systems that break down and pump out compounds, mainly CYP3A4, CYP2C9 and P-glycoprotein (Horn and Hansten, 2017).

The classic study gave 20 mg of piperine with curcumin and saw curcumin absorption rise about 2000% (Shoba et al., 1998). Nobody has measured what 5 mg does for ASU, Boswellia or quercetin.

The same effect can touch your medicines

At 15-20 mg a day, piperine raised blood levels of drugs such as carbamazepine, phenytoin and propranolol (Ziegenhagen et al., 2021). SynoCell's 5 mg is lower, but its effect on a given medicine is untested. Ask your pharmacist before you start.

Why take SynoCell with a meal?

Take it with food, because ASU is fat-soluble. Fat-soluble compounds are absorbed along with the fat in a meal, so an empty stomach may waste some of the dose.

  1. 01

    Take 2 capsules

Swallow the serving on the label, 2 capsules, with a full glass of water.

  2. 02

    Pair it with a meal

Breakfast is easy to remember. A meal also helps the fat-soluble ASU absorb.

  3. 03

    Same time daily

Keep the bottle by your coffee or toothbrush so you never double up.

  4. 04

    Track 30 days

Note stairs, rising from a chair and walks. Decide well before the 90-day window closes.

The label serving is 2 capsules; follow your bottle's directions. More tips are on how to use SynoCell.

Are the amounts close to what was studied?

For two ingredients, yes. ASU and hyaluronic acid sit near the doses used in trials. Boswellia is in a similar range but a different extract. Quercetin is well below common supplement doses and has no joint trials to compare against.

Each "Label" bar is drawn to scale against the amount used in research, capped at 100%. ASU and hyaluronic acid sit close to the trial doses. The Boswellia trials used different extracts, so the comparison is rough. Quercetin is well below common supplement doses, and has no human joint trials. Studies tested each ingredient alone, not SynoCell.

What can SynoCell not do?

It cannot replace the treatments with the strongest evidence. The 2026 American College of Rheumatology guideline strongly recommends exercise, weight loss for knee and hip osteoarthritis with overweight, and topical or oral NSAIDs. It does not address ASU or Boswellia at all (ACR, 2026 OA guideline summary).

Seller claims from the brand store next to what human research shows
Brand store saysWhat human studies show
Reduces inflammation, stops the cytokine stormNot measured in any human joint trial of these ingredients (MSKCC, Quercetin)
Speeds joint healingNot shown; ASU did not slow hip joint-space loss over 3 years (Maheu et al., 2014 (ERADIAS))
Lubricates cartilage, restores cushioningNot shown; swallowed HA is not an injection, and results are mixed (Guadagna et al., 2018)
Supports joint comfortSome support for ASU and Boswellia alone, with small effects (Cameron and Chrubasik, 2014) (Yu et al., 2020)

A suddenly hot, red, swollen joint, or joint pain with fever, needs urgent care, not a supplement (MedlinePlus, Septic arthritis). For the full picture, read SynoCell benefits, checked.

FAQ

Questions about how SynoCell works

How does SynoCell work in the body?

Each ingredient has its own proposed action. ASU and Boswellia are studied for easing osteoarthritis pain, hyaluronic acid is a joint-fluid molecule taken by mouth, quercetin is a plant antioxidant, and piperine helps absorption. No trial has tested the full SynoCell formula, so how they work together is unknown.

Can SynoCell repair worn knee cartilage?

No human study shows that. In a 3-year hip trial, ASU did not change joint-space loss compared with placebo. Swallowed hyaluronic acid is not the same as an injection. The brand store's cartilage and healing claims are its own words, not findings from research on these ingredients.

Why is there black pepper in SynoCell?

The 5 mg of black pepper extract supplies piperine, which slows some systems that break down compounds in the gut and liver. That can raise absorption of other ingredients. The same effect can raise blood levels of some medicines, so ask a pharmacist if you take prescriptions.

Should I take SynoCell with food or on an empty stomach?

With food is the better choice. ASU is fat-soluble, so a meal with some fat helps it absorb. Breakfast or dinner both work; pick one and keep it the same each day.

Is SynoCell an anti-inflammatory?

It is not a drug and is not shown to reduce inflammation in people. The brand store says it does, but no human joint trial of its ingredients measured that. Treat that claim as marketing until a trial of the product shows otherwise.

How long before SynoCell might help?

No timeline is published by the brand. Boswellia trials ran about 90 days, and a meta-analysis suggests at least 4 weeks. A fair test is about a month of steady daily use, judged by stairs, walks and getting up from a chair.
